Would another bill have to be introduced and signed by the President to undo what was done in 1954?

  • The Rev. George M. Docherty, credited with helping to push Congress to insert the phrase "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance, has died at 97.

Docherty died on Thanksgiving at his home in central Pennsylvania, according to his wife, Sue Docherty.

Docherty, then pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, just blocks from the White House, gave a sermon in 1952 saying the pledge should acknowledge God.

He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was unfamiliar with the pledge until he heard it recited by his 7-year-old son, Garth.

"I didn't know that the Pledge of Allegiance was, and he recited it, 'one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,'" he recalled in an interview with The Associated Press in 2004. "I came from Scotland, where we said 'God save our gracious queen,' 'God save our gracious king.' Here was the Pledge of Allegiance, and God wasn't in it at all."

There was little effect from that initial sermon, but he delivered it again on Feb. 7, 1954, after learning that President Dwight Eisenhower would be at the church.

The next day, Rep. Charles G. Oakman, R-Mich., introduced a bill to add the phrase "under God" to the pledge, and a companion bill was introduced in the Senate. Eisenhower signed the law on Flag Day that year. http://www.onenewsnow.com/Church/Default...

I guess what I'm asking is, is it conceivable that any President could undo what was made law in 1954, and how would he go about doing it? Thank you for your answers!

  • Presidents can't undo the law (present Administration apparently excepted). The Constitution gives the Congress the power to create money. So, we'd need to change the law. Personally, I think we have some other things that need our attention more.

  • what i feel is happening with the government and Christian values is this: the government can take away the pledge, God from our money, the ten commandments from our courtroom (and the list goes on and on...), i say so what!
what do i feel the Christian family needs to do?
we need to take responsibility for passing the Christian "baton" on to our children. it is our responsibility to teach our children about God; not the government. it is not going to matter what was written in 1954 or 2009 by our government if our children hearts never got the message from their family.
i know folks that drink beer on a daily basis that is complaining about the government taking their christian rights. please put the beer down, pick up the bible and read it to your children.

  • Why would he want to? God is the only hope America has.

  • Just my bit on this subject
but WHY do we even have a "pledge of Allegiance" ?

Much less, having anything to do with GOD in it?

This nation is supposed to have room for atheists, agnostics
and all manner of religions. so whats up with the UNDER GOD
    bit in the pledge.

    Just think,
if you do religion the way that the GOV. likes,
you get a big fat juicy tax exemption
and if you do NOT do religion the way that the GOV. likes ...
    you get NOTHING!

    oh well.......

  • I think another bill should be introduced if that were to happen, but I pray it doesn't come to that. I think if that happens, God forbid, then sudden destruction will be near. Some times I wonder if it matters to people wether it is in there or not because not every one believes or acts like we are one nation under God. Even though everyone doesn't believe we are one nation under God, the ones who don't just don't quote that part, but to take it out would not give believers any thing to pledge allegiance to out flag for. Hope that makes sense, I am not very strong in the political aspect of things.

  • Such action could take the form of an act of Congress signed by the President or a court determination that the original act inserting the phrase was unconstitutional. Such a case would primarily be based on the Establishment or Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Because "under God" does not tend to establish the pracitce of any one religion or constitute the government's endorsement of any one religion, or force any person to practice any one religion, I believe such a case is unlikely. That was tried in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in about 2004 or 2005, and I think the guy who brought that case is still trying to make a case out of it.

  • I don't know the legalities of bringing about a new law that nullifies an older law. But this is just another example of our government wanting God in our country contrary to some people's claims that our country was never founded on God.

What a heart warming story. Too bad God is not fashionable in our country today, our country that is only a great nation because we have always included God in it.

  • I am not an American and the only thing I have to compare is Israel. God said He would bless Israel if they followed Him. Israel turned their back on God and were punished.

God has blessed America like no other nation the world has ever seen. If America continues to turn their back on God a similar result will happen as did to Israel.

2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

God is speaking to believers...listen to Him...believers in America.

  • I suppose it's 'conceivable', but why bother?

  • I think people should be able to vote to change anything in the constitution. The sad thing here is that our Country was established on freedom of worshiping GOD, not putting him out of everything. The nation that forgets God will not stand long. Many do not even at knowledge God in celebrating Christmas. It's only a holiday for them. When Jesus comes, will he find many with faith? He said he would not.

  • amazing the difference in the USA 1954 and 2008.
