surely, what they call soccer is a far more accurate description of the term footballIt should be called, 'Put crash helmets on and let's all run into each other, don't forget the shoulder pads.'
Silliest game I have ever seen, I would have thought such a great Country could come up with something better than that!. Terry.Yes, and soccer is what female boxing should be called.
Go play kickball before some football player kicks your ***.they just do!For the nerdy response:
American football is based, of course, on rugby.
American football resulted from several major divergences from rugby, most notably the rule changes instituted by Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football". Among these important changes were the introduction of the line of scrimmage and of down-and-distance rules.[
Since its origional inseption in the mid 1800's it has had many changes moving the actions more form the foot to the throwing running and catching seen today.AMERICANS DO WHAT THEY WANTS AND SAY WHATS THEY WANTS
CHEEERSIt's called football because when you kick the ball it makes contact with your foot. Volleyball is called that because you have 'vollies'. Basketball is called that because it has a basket. It doesn't mean that you have to kick the ball constantly for it to be football.Wooooahhh! Calm down everyone, no need for all this sport bashing! Both Football (soccer) and American Football are great sports.
American Football obviously derives from Rugby, which for years was called 'Rugby Football', because it came about when boys at Rugby School picked up the ball playing football and ran with it!
I agree it shouldn't solely be called football, but what's the problem with it being called American Football. It's better than 'American Rugby Football'.
PS One last thing!
I know i said not to bash sports, but Baseball! What a load of crap that is! it's just glorified rounders!Because origins of american Football go back to at least 1869. In that period the game was very different and had a lot in common with rugby (which still allows use of feet at any time but you don't see it very often) and english football.
As decades passed rules were changed but the original name remained.it's originated from rugby union.. or rugby league.. and people back then also call rugby a football.. so I think the name stuck since then.. But personally football is a game where the offense is trying to move a ball one foot at a time..Why do non-Americans keep coming here and asking this? Why do they think WE CARE what they think of our titles for games? To be honest we don't. Anyway handball is taken by a game that you use your hands to hit the ball if I'm not mistaken, never played it. Catch and run ball sounds stupid, and leaves out hand-offs even with the term run. Run ball sounds dumb and leaves the pass end of the game out.
Oh and for diva's sake AMERICAN'S didn't come up with the name soccer. It was around before we started calling it that and apparently is supposed to be shorthand for association football.1. Cuz Hand ball... Sounds alittle freeky.. "Here we are for yet another hard hitting game of hand ball"Dumbest question I've seen here, and that's saying a lotwhy the hell do they call cricket, cricket they dont hit crickets they might step on them when they run to where ever cricket players run to. our football is a mans sport, like rugby but better we hit harder. thats why we are taking the nfl to other countries to see if any of your athletes would come over but they are to busy putting on there knickers and heading some balls. Its not a map telling you what to do with the ball, when American football started the ball was approxiamately 12 inches or one foot long.because they want to and because it starts off kicking it and after they score they kick itThat's like asking why do we English speaking people call Germany "Germany" and not "Deustschland" as do the natives of that country in their own language. It's simply because that's what we've been accustomed to calling it all of our lives.
In the US we are used to calling international football soccer because that's the term that the vast majority of us natural born citizens grew up with for it. We even have our own "soccer leagues" here. As someone else said, some of the immigrants that came over the US referred to the international football as "soccer" so in this country that name stuck. While we had our own "football" through both the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (eventually merged with the NFL) .
Keep in mind that the NFL started in the US and dates back to the 1920s. So for decades this country has had it's own sport that the founder called "football." Basically if we've been calling it football for over 80 years, the NFL isn't going to change the name of it's sport simply because international football deals a lot more with kicking the ball around the feild.Good question. But i dunnoi guess because it starts with a kickoff by the foot
no matter what they call it, it is far better than soccer and basketball and any other game anyone might come up with.
American football is the best game ever.Lol, I totally agree! And they make fun of British football, claiming theirs is better ..... like that makes senseLOL I'm an American and that is so funny .... I could never figure that one out my self...The game we call foot ball is more like rugby.....And were did we come up with the name soccer? LOLyeah but you're forgetting the only people who like soccer in this country are gay people, I'm not making fun of gay people, but most of the gays & lesbians that I know likes soccer.
We have a kicker, but it's not that literal.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
