welcome to my space

My dog had one puppy at 430 this morning none since she is 4 years old and not in any discomfort although ?

  • she has had small contractions that last for a minute or so and breathing heavy off and on, I am going to take her to the vet as soon as my wife gets off work does she have more pups in her? is she going to be ok?

  • I'd be seeing the vet. At this point you are risking the lives of any pups that remain.

The longer you wait the more likely it is that she'll need a c-section and the later it is the more likely you'll end up at a very expensive emergency vet clinic.

If I were you, I'd be on the phone with my vet and I'd be rushing my dog in... but then, I didn't breed a dog without knowing what to do...

  • You should take her to the vet! But i have heard that with a dogs first pregnancy/birth there can be quite a bit of time between puppies births. So don't worry yet! Good luck!

  • Comfort her right now until you go to the vet. And when your wife gets home, go immediately.

  • You need to make sure the placenta came out as well...since you're taking the dog to the vet anyway...keep your dog warm and well hydrated and take the puppy as well

  • most likely, yes, she does have more pups...however, that's a VERY long time inbetween...good thing you'll be taking her to the vet.

  • I would make sure you keep her hydrated, warm, and if she starts digging her paws into something it means she has some discomfort. Not literally digging just pushing. She probably has two or three more puppies in her, i'm a vet tech and i've seen dogs have hours and hours of differences between labors. So I would make sure that you just stay nearby and keep encouraging her if she starts digging her paws until your wife gets home and make sure that you bring her immediatly to the vet don't put it off. Bring the puppy just to have him checked out too. Don't worry dogs have puppies all the time and it's natural so just let her do what she has to do.

  • Good questions to ask the vet!

  • She wil probably be okay until you can get her to the vet. NEED to do so as soon as the wife gets home though.

  • If she has anymore inside there I would think that they could be dead.
    But not always.

The vet will examine her and tell you if there are more. A c-section may be necessary if there are more that are being retained or they may help stimulate labor with drugs.

She should be fine though barring any really strange complications.

  • one pup is highly unusual. You can palpate her belly to feel for another puppy. Put one hand on her back just above her tail. Put the other hand on her belly. Using the hand on her back to stabalize her take the other hand and feel around for what would feel like little hard balls. Depending on the size of dog it would be like feeling for a golf ball, tennis ball, hand ball, soft ball etc....(look at the pup she had as a guide) If there is a puppy stuck in the birth canal she would most likely be in pain and distress. Is she caring for the pup she did give birth to? My dog many years ago had this happen. The other pup was stuck for hours and it died inside of her. She got a bad infection and was in the hospital for days.

  • You don't know how many puppies to expect? That would have been something that an x ray would have easily spotted. The dog needs *some* vet care during the pregnancy.

We cannot possibly know if your dog is going to be ok.

    BYB alert!

  • According to you it has been over 12 hrs since the first pup was born?? You should not wait over 2 maybe 3 hrs between pups.Hopefully any other pups are still alive .Have you did a physical check to her to see if she has any other pups?Uterine inertia doesn't cause pain but just slows whelping way down. This is where contractions are not strong enough or there aren't enough of them to deliver pups.Vet intervention needed.

  • has the afterbirth come out? if not then she may have more pups. i'm not a vet, but i would keep her comfortable and take her and her newborn pups to the vet as soon as possible. good luck
