Just a small suggestion - JPG compression for posted images

  • I know a lot of people are already familiar with using JPG, but I thought I would add this suggestion that if you are going to be saving a photograph for posting, that you use a quality level of at least 80%. The higher the compression, the more artifacts get introduced, and they often detract from the image. I'm so used to seeing them that they jump right out at me and can ruin an otherwise great shot.

In the days of 2400 baud modems and limited disk space, small image file sizes were really important. Now, with dial-ups modems being more than 20x as fast, cable often being 1000x faster, and huge hard drives, I don't see much need for highly compressed JPGs, especially at the dimensions used for posting to the forum.

  • agreed. I think especially for a photography forum you want to bring the best quality image that you can.
